ONLINE DEGREES

How do online degrees work?

a rolled-up degree certificate.

Online degrees work much the same way as traditional degrees, the information and coursework will generally be the same, the only difference is in the way that you are taught. Rather than attending a normal campus all your learning will be done through a computer and the internet.

Online degree courses can take many forms and use various methods of teaching depending on the course provider and the nature of the course. Many online degree programs use web cam conferences or broadcasts along with instant chat messaging, bulletin boards, and e-mail to deliver lectures and lessons to the students.

Depending on the university or school that is running the program your lessons may either be received 'live'or 'non-live'. If you are having live lessons then you will be told what time and days to log onto the school's website. Then you will have to watch or listen to the tutors lecture and possibly participate in discussions or group work about the lesson as well. Some programs allow you to go back to previous lessons if you missed them or need to refresh your memory on some points. Live programs may also consist of online group discussions and online tests and quizzes.

With non-live courses lessons are either posted on the school's bulletin board, accessed through the website or e-mailed to the students. These programs offer students more flexibilty in how and when they take their lessons as they are not required to be at their computer at certain times. Non-live programs can also use discussion boards, online tests or forums.

Whichever type of course you go for it is important that you first check with your chosen school what, if any, requirements there are pertaining to that course. For instance with some online degree programs you may be required to log on to the school's website so many times in a week in order for that school to make sure that you are still participating in and working on the course. Or you may have to attend the school in person at some point during your course, often either at the beginning to meet the tutors or at the end to collect your certification.

However, not all schools have such conditions and it is entirely possible and indeed quite common now for students to be able to achieve their degree 100% online. Even your degree certificate can be e-mailed to you to print up or it can be sent to you through the post.

Before choosing a school or university to study your online degree course with first ask yourself what you want the degreee for and if it needs to come from an accredited institution. If the degree is relevant and you need it for employment or promotion then check with your employer what schools they will accept degress from and if they will accept them from non-accredited organisations.

If, however you want a degree that isn't neccessarily relevant to any job or profession then you may be able to learn with a non-accredited school. Whatever the case this is important to know and will obviously affect your choice of school and as such should be thought about before embarking on any online degree program.
