How to choose an online school or university?

hands typing on a computer keyboard.

There are literally thousands of online schools and online universities for you to choose from when you want to take a distance learning course. So how do you choose which one is right for you?

Well firstly you need to decide upon the course or courses that you wish to study. There is no point spending ages choosing between schools then deciding upon one that doesn't run the course that you want to take.

When you have chosen your course you need to decide what method of studying you prefer to use, i.e. distance learning via post, audio tape, TV conferencing or online via cd's, software, web cam lectures, virtual chat classrooms etc.

Finally you need to decide whether the school or university needs to be accredited. This will depend on what course you are studying for, the qualification you want to obtain, and what the purpose of the qualification is for. If for example, you want to obtain a specific certificate in computer technology or an extra A-Level, then you most likely won't need an accredited school and may instead be better off going with a non-accredited university or online training centre.

Once you have decided on all that then you can start searching for your school. If you type into Google 'distance learning courses' you will come up with over 2 million results, so clearly using the search engines is not going to be a viable option when choosing between the many thousands of schools.

Your best option therefore is to use a special search provider or directory website of online schools and universities. These websites can greatly narrow down your search and will quickly help you find the schools that provide all the requirements that you are looking for. There are many such specialist websites but two of the most popular ones worth taking a look at are: Petersons.com and DirectDegree.com. Both of these websites have a comprehensive list of colleges and universities that offer distance and online learning courses and are all fully accredited.

Once you have found a handful of prospective schools then you can manually compare them and decide which one is right for you. When comparing schools the things to take into consideration are;

After comparing your short list of online schools with your checklist you should then be able to make the right decision about which school will be the best for you to study with.
