Has Long Distance Learning Worked for You? Have you completed any type of vocational program or college work online? How practical is it for working adults or those with small kids to really complete a long distance learning program ?

I completed my Institute of Bankers Part 1 this way. In those days the internet did not exist so all done by post with what is now called distance learning. The second part included night school. Both require dedication and discipline; even more with children. You have to arrange your life around your study. I am a little bit unusual in that my brain is best after about 10.00pm but this is wonderful for study and my own writing.
Decide that you want to study, and then plan the time. It is all about self discipline. Without that it will not work. It is hard for working mums or dads because your day is stretched so apply one or two nights to study and nothing but. It is not forever. Remember that and also the rewards at the end. Make sure you stick to your schedule and get sleep so that you can work the next day.

When my daughter was born just over 10 years ago, I completed my AA degree online. I used the local community college's distance learning department. Some of the classes were done by video and email; others were all online. We were required to come to campus for exams; the dates given on the first day and there was some flexibility for emergencies. These amounted to just a few hours in the entire quarter. Comparable to scheduling a doctor's visit.
I loved it. It's not for everyone, but it worked great for me. You need to be able to prioritize, and continue to keep yourself on target through the quarter or semester of work. You need to be proactive about seeking clarification from the instructor when necessary. There won't be checking in in class, you won't notice yourself falling behind because you won't be able to easily compare notes with classmates. But on the flip side, you don't have to worry about nightly assignments/readings, or getting places on time daily/weekly, and you can be somewhat flexible in your studies. If you know next week is full of activities for your kids and job, you can get ahead this week. Things definitely work best by getting ahead early, rather than planning to play catch up later!

I've taken a number of online classes, and the problem with most of the online classes in your situation is that you still need to have free time every day in order to do the assignments - you can't wait until the weekend to catch up on the past weeks work.
Some classes might be more flexible than others, so be sure you find out up front. Also, some of my classes wanted us to come to the school for tests only or for a mandatory introduction class so it wasn't entirely online. So again, you have to be very sure of the class parameters before committing to it.
The online colleges usually have academic counselors available to help you with your specific challenges, including day care.
