Under ideal conditions, it is recommended that you leave one car's length of following distance per 10MPH of travel speed. thus, at 40MPH, you'll leave four car lengths. Under NOT so ideal conditions - night driving, fog, rain, dirty roadway, if someone is tailgating you, or any combination of those (and that is in no way an all inclusive list), allow MORE distance.
Also, as a motorcycle rider, PLEASE always allow a MUCH longer distance between you and a motorcycle rider. We can EASILY stop in half the distance that a car can stop in, and if you don't see us, you can easily injure a bike rider.

One way to gauge the proper stopping distance is to locate a visible item such as a road street light. When the vehicle you are folllowing passes the item, start counting . . . one- one thousand, two-one thousands, etc. The count correlates to the speed you are traveling with each second equating to each ten miles per hour.
For example, if you are traveling 60 miles per hour, you should not reach th roadmark before your count reaches six secondsor one- six thousands. You also have to consider actual thinking time (when you recognize the hazard and realize you have to brake) and reaction time (the time it takes for you to apply the brakes.) Of course, road and driving conditions will impact all stopping variables.
