Which distance learning course would give a qualification that could lead to job with special needs children?

Am considering a distance learning course that would enable to me to eventually get a foot in the door to working with special needs children. Which would be the ideal course to take? Child care & development? Teaching assistant course? To those that have already been there and done that which courses did you take?

I have worked in Special Needs Education for 17 years. Initially as an Support Worker and now an Learning Support Assistant. I don't believe that any training can fully prepare you and you really need to get some on the job experience. My employer offers CACHE training which is equivalent to NVQ. There are 2 levels and take approximately 2 years. Very worthwhile doing at the same time as working with the children.
